Anläggningen
Anläggning producerar i första hand lax men i reningsprocessen ingår även en algodling, ur vilken kisel utvinns. Dessutom är lax- och algodlingen kopplad till en biogasanläggning. Restprodukterna i denna process kommer inte anses som avfall, utan spela en mycket viktig roll i produktionen av bland annat energi, växtkraft och läkemedel.
Miljö och energi
Smögenlax och biogasanläggningen Renahavs vision är att orden miljö och energi skall kunna nämnas i samma mening utan att tankarna direkt förs till oåterkallelig förändring av naturresurser och omvärld. Genom att i varje steg ta till vara och återanvända de rester och resurser som är en del i och runt produktionen av sjömat återför Renahav stora delar av det som tidigare gått förlorat.
Lokal verklighet
Smögenlax kommer inom kort kunna vara en del av det nya lokala och regionala arbete som görs för att förbättra våra samhällen, genom att aktivt bidra med möjligheter till nya arbetstillfällen, energi, miljöfärbättringar, produkter och livskraft.

Our projects
Building the future of sustainable salmon farming
At Smögenlax Aquaculture, we are developing the next generation of sustainable, land-based salmon farming on the Swedish West Coast. Turning this vision into reality requires long-term commitment, investment and courage — but also strong collaboration between industry, research and the public sector.
Public support enables us to accelerate innovation and take important steps forward. Through these projects we develop new solutions in environmental technology, energy efficiency, circular resource use and animal welfare — areas where Sweden has the potential to become a global leader.
Several of our ongoing projects receive support from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme 2021–2027, financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and the Swedish government through the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
The funding allows us to develop new technologies, circular resource flows and sustainable production models for the future of land-based salmon farming — in close collaboration with research partners and local companies within the Sotenäs Symbiosis.
At Smögenlax Aquaculture, several development projects are currently underway to build a resilient, efficient and sustainable land-based salmon farming facility on the Swedish West Coast.
These projects strengthen infrastructure, production technology and environmental performance within our circular aquaculture system.
Infrastructure & Resilience
These investments ensure stable operations and strengthen the facility’s resilience and food production capacity.
Backup Power System (Reservkraft och Avsaltning)
Backup power ensures that operations can continue safely even during power outages, protecting both fish welfare and production stability. The desalination system allows us to maintain an optimal salinity level of 12–14‰ in the grow-out tanks. The smolt facility operates with freshwater.
Oxygen Supply System (Inlösen av syre)
A reliable oxygen supply is essential for fish health and for maintaining safe operations, both during normal production and in emergency situations.
Fish Production Systems
These projects focus on building a secure and efficient production chain from egg to harvest-size salmon.
Hatchery (Äggkläckeri)
The production cycle begins with fertilized eggs that are hatched in our own hatchery, ensuring high biosecurity and full control of the early life stages.
Smolt Facility (Smoltanläggning)
Young fish are raised in a dedicated smolt facility until they reach approximately 100 grams, before being transferred to the main grow-out tanks.
Fish Farming Tanks (Fiskodlingstankar)
Approximately 25 indoor tanks of varying sizes are being constructed to support different stages of fish growth.
Circular Water Treatment
Our land-based system relies on advanced water treatment technologies that minimize environmental impact.
Denitrification System in the RAS Facility
Water is treated in an advanced denitrification system where nitrogen and nitrates are removed, maintaining optimal water quality in the recirculating aquaculture system.
Smart Technology & Monitoring
Automation and digital monitoring enable efficient operations and high fish welfare.
Feed Robot
Smögenlax has previously developed its own feed robot in smaller scale. The next step is a fully automated system that adjusts feeding based on the needs and behaviour of the fish.
Lighting System
Lighting is optimized to support fish health and to prevent premature sexual maturation.
Instrumentation and Monitoring
Advanced instrumentation allows all critical parameters to be continuously monitored and recorded, ensuring stable and sustainable operations.
Ansvarstagande produktion
Smögenlax producerar sin lax i linje med FNs globala mål för hållbar utveckling.
Smögenlax/Renahav fick äran att som ett av få bolag bli inbjudna av Svenska Regeringen att representera svenska initiativ och inovationer i FN under The Ocean Conference 5-9 juni 2017.
Ocean Conference (extern länk)
Smögenlax har även ett större utvecklingsprojekt gående i samarbete med Innovatum, Trollhättan, och ledande forskare. En del av försöken finansieras av Europeiska Havs och Fiske Fonden (EHFF). Det avser rening av vatten med ett unikt denitrifikation-system för saltvatten. EHFF har också beviljat ett startstöd till Smögenlax. Läs mer om denitrifikation (docx-fil, 0.6 mb).
Leader Bohuskust och gränsbygd har beviljat ett projektstöd för ”Etablering av landbaserad Laxodling”. Syftet med projektet är bland annat att ta fram en lathund för hur ett miljötillstånd sökes för en landbasderad fiskodling samt framtagande av en komplett inlämnad miljötillståndsansökan för etablering av en vattenbruksanläggning i området.
